Protect Life U-M Constitution
Protect Life U-M is a non-partisan, non-sectarian, and non-profit organization committed to promoting and defending the dignity and protection of all human life, from the moment of conception until natural death. We endeavor to fulfill this mission by providing educational resources about the issues of abortion, unplanned pregnancy, adoption, euthanasia, infanticide, embryonic stem cell research, and the death penalty. We will interact with other students through outreach and dialogue in order to promote a culture of life on our campus.
Section 1:
The name of this organization shall be Protect Life at the University of Michigan, herein referred to as Protect Life U-M.
Section 1:
As an organization committed to promoting the dignity and protection of all human life, from the moment of conception until natural death, the purpose of Protect Life U-M is to engage with students and the general public regarding pro-life issues, provide support for pregnant and parenting students (including: an academic scholarship for a parenting student funded by our donors), as well as to provide pro-life students on campus with opportunities to socialize in a like-minded community. The pro-life issues that we are concerned with include abortion, unplanned pregnancy, adoption, euthanasia, infanticide, embryonic stem cell research, and the death penalty (“Pro-Life Issues”). This purpose will be accomplished primarily by:
Section 1:
Protect Life U-M is a constituent chapter for Protect Life Michigan (“PLM”). Currently, Protect Life U-M has no other affiliations to report.
Section 1:
Protect Life U-M reserves the right to appoint or disappoint a sponsor as desired. Professor Scott Lyons currently serves as Advisor to Protect Life U-M.
Section 1:
Protect Life U-M is committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all persons and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, height, weight, or veteran status in its membership or activities. Protect Life U-M understands and fully adheres to the policies, rules, and regulations for student clubs and organizations as set forth by the University of Michigan.
Upon joining the organization, all members agree not to undermine the purpose or mission of Protect Life U-M. Failure to do so is grounds for dismissal, the process for which is outlined in Article IX.
Section 2:
Students interested in becoming a member of Protect Life U-M need to attend any meeting and ask to be added to the email listserv.
A member in good standing is a member who, during the winter semester, pays dues, attends three meetings, and participates in one Protect Life outreach. A member in excellent standing is a member who, during the winter semester, pays dues, attends five meetings, and participates in two Protect Life outreaches.
Section 3:
A student can withdraw membership from Protect Life U-M through an oral, written or reliable electronic statement, such as an email, to the President expressing a wish to withdraw membership.
A due paying student wishing to withdraw from Protect Life U-M will not be refunded for dues.
Section 4:
No member may volunteer at, engage with, or promote for any entity that outwardly promotes or participates in abortion or Planned Parenthood in any way. Members will be made aware of major companies that support and are big players in the abortion industry. Knowingly operating with or promoting for such organizations may be grounds for dismissal, the process for which is outlined in Article IX.
Section 5:
Any member who would like to participate in outreach must sign a non-violence agreement form that will be distributed by the Officers, defined in Article VII, Section 4.
Section 1:
Protect Life U-M members will elect a President, a Vice President, a Treasurer, a Secretary, a Community Coordinator, and a Fundraising Coordinator each year (the “Elected Officers”). The duties of Elected Officers are as follows:
Section 2:
The Officers shall meet at least once every month, or more at the President’s discretion, during the Fall and Winter semesters. They shall also attend the regular weekly meetings of Protect Life U-M at-large.
Section 3:
PLM reserves the right to remove officership at their discretion, particularly for those who go against the principles of Protect Life U-M.
Section 1:
Any University of Michigan student who is a member in good standing of Protect Life U-M and subscribes to the common goals of the group as stated in the Protect Life U-M constitution is eligible for voting. Any University of Michigan student who is a member in excellent standing of Protect Life U-M and subscribes to the common goals of the group as stated in the Protect Life U-M constitution is eligible for voting and running for office.
Section 2:
Elected Officers are elected annually at a meeting in April which is to be set aside especially for that purpose. Members in excellent standing may nominate themselves for Elected Officer positions at the onset of elections. Nominees shall be elected by rank choice voting of members in good or excellent standing who shall vote by an anonymous ballot. If a member running for an Elected Officer cannot attend the meeting they will be responsible for either: giving their speech via zoom call during the meeting time or meeting with a current Elected Officer to record their speech in one take. If a voting member cannot attend the meeting, the Secretary will be responsible for providing access to all nominees' speeches.
Section 3:
The Elected Officers do not assume their positions and responsibilities until the end of the winter term (the “Transition Date”).
Section 4:
The President shall appoint a Public Relations Chair (the “PR Chair”) from among the Elected Officers at the first Officer meeting after the election cycle outlined in Article VII, Section 2. The PR Chair shall oversee updates of, as well as manage, the Protect Life U-M website, Facebook page, and any other social media accounts. They will be responsible for taking photos or videos and documenting club activities. The PR Chair may delegate their responsibilities.
The Elected Officers may also appoint Members in good standing to other Officer positions to complete other essential duties for Protect Life U-M (the “Appointed Officers”). In order to appoint a Member in good standing to an Officer position, at least 80% (a “supermajority”) of Elected Officers must vote affirmatively to do so. The terms for Appointed Officers may be predetermined but must expire on or before the Transition Date outlined in Article VII, Section 3.
Appointed Officers may be removed from office at any time by a supermajority of Elected Officers.
Elected and Appointed Officers (the “Officers”) jointly attend Officer Meetings and altogether handle club operations as outlined in Article VI, Section 1.
Section 5:
In the event of a vacancy for an Elected Officer position, the remaining Elected Officers shall elect a successor at any Officer meeting by a supermajority vote of the remaining Elected Officers. An Officer elected thusly to fill a vacancy shall serve out the remainder of the term.
Section 6:
For ordinary decisions, those notwithstanding other provisions of this document, at least 51% (a “simple majority”) of Elected Officers shall agree to undertake particular courses of action, to endorse legislation or statements, or to adopt new club resources.
Section 1:
Protect Life U-M will finance its activities through the use of funds collected through fundraisers and donations. The group will also apply for funding through the Center for Campus Involvement and the LSA Student Government to assist in financing programs and activities.
Section 2:
The Treasurer of Protect Life U-M has the primary responsibility of managing the organization's finances, with additional oversight from the President and Vice President.
Section 3:
Funds collected through donations and fundraisers shall be used for activities and events held by
Protect Life U-M, including but not limited to speaker costs and travel fees, room rentals, supplies for events, and resources for pregnant women encountered by Protect Life U-M.
Section 1:
Any member of Protect Life U-M at the University of Michigan in violation of Protect Life U-M’s purpose, constitution, or who fails to meet the membership requirements outlined in Article V, may have their privileges as a member revoked through the following process:
Notwithstanding the foregoing, PLM reserves the right to remove membership at their discretion, particularly for those who go against the principles of the organization.
Section 2:
Officers shall be removed from office if the Officer engages in any action that is contrary to the rules and regulations for student groups as set forth by the University of Michigan, illegal or unethical, or contrary to the goals and objectives of Protect Life U-M as set forth in this constitution.
Section 3:
An Elected Officer may be removed by an affirmative supermajority vote of the disinterested Elected Officers. Notwithstanding the foregoing, PLM reserves the right to remove officership at their discretion, as outlined in Article VI, Section 3.
Section 4:
The process of removal shall be presided over by the President excepting in the situation where the President is the Officer in question. In this case, the removal process shall be presided over by the Vice President.
Section 1:
Amendments to the constitution may be proposed both by the general membership of Protect Life U-M and by the Officers. Any proposed amendment shall be submitted in writing to the Officers at least two weeks before being presented for adoption at any general meeting.
Section 2:
Amendments to the constitution shall be adopted upon a supermajority vote of the Elected Officers.
Section 1:
This constitution must be ratified by a supermajority of the Elected Officers to take effect and shall be reviewed every two years.
